Volunteering for Education Is Power can take on many different forms. We have volunteer positions for educators, web designers, social media coordinators and so much much more.

Request for Board Members

Education Is Power Africa is seeking new board members. As an established grassroots organization supporting over 100 African youth to school in Kenya and Tanzania, we are seeking board members with relevant experience and adequate time to co-create a strategic plan to further EIP’s mission. The four communities we currently work with are Kijabe, Kenya; Chumvi, Lakipia North Kenya; Lokusero, Laikipia North Kenya; and Arusha Tanzania. Our mandates are set up to collaborate with new partners doing similar work in Kenya and Tanzania, with the potential to work in other African countries. We welcome ideas to push our mission and vision forward. This section is full of highly capable East African youth who exhibit great potential to lead their communities to a harmonious future. Yet these young people lack the funds to pursue an education. We support secondary students in Kenya and Tanzania; and we also strongly believe in supporting these youth onto post-secondary studies, thus enabling them to fully exploit their potential.

In North American classrooms, teachers know it is important to expose their young students to global issues. Education Is Power (EIP) can help enrich such global exposure. Through EIP’s grassroots educational advancement in Kenya and Tanzania, we have incredible stories and teachings to share, coming straight from the source – the young East Africans who toiled their way to the dream of education. We want to bring these incredibly dedicated young Africans right to your classroom…via Skype video conferencing! Volunteer Positions

The following are volunteer positions EIP Africa is seeking. Currently, EIP is most interested in recruiting members near to Victoria BC, where this grassroots organization is based in Canada. However, we are always open to offers of help wherever they may be from. Please get in touch to share your input or to attend our next volunteer meeting.

Social Media Coordinator

Position Summary: The Social Media Coordinator of EIP Africa is responsible forengaging the public innewson education and empowerment, as well as updates of supported students progress. The social media coordinator also designs e-appeals based on supported student’s stories and other related work EIP is doing. An emphasis is to be put on increasing followers/supporters through recognized social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and more. The position also involves delegating and leading other EIP volunteers in Canada and Kenya who are involved in social media.

Description of Duties:

Oversee utilization of social media outlets.
Design new social media pages for EIP or improve existing ones.
Post relevant stories of EIP.
Post related news links that make connections to youth empowerment, and relieving poverty through education and empowerment, especially in Africa but also in other parts of the world.
Work together with EIP Student Advocates, and other EIP members in East Africa to collect news stories that can be condensed into short posts with photos or video.
Collaborate/delegate with Social Media Officers to maximize the amount of posts and quality of content.•
Develop strategies to increase the number of followers/supporters.
Design promotional materials and assist in designing e-bulletins
Opportunity to participatein Skype meetings between Canadian and East African members of EIP.
Opportunity to take on other duties asdesired.
Desire to visit East Africa and do work in the field.

Skill requirements and attributes:

Wellorganized.
Creative.
Writing, especially with regards to condensing stories that draw in readers.

Organizational Relationships / Supervision:

Training and Orientation: You will be given written instructions, support materials and further information to gain a better understanding of Education Is Power. There will beaninitial in-person orientation and ongoing support as required.

Time commitment: The Social Media Coordinator must commit to filling the position for a minimum of one year. The time commitment varies from 3to 5 hours per week.

Working conditions:We require the volunteer to use their own computer and work from home. Necessary minor expenses will be reimbursed upon submission of receipts and/or detailed log.

Student Advocate Director

Position Summary: The Student Advocate Director of Education is Power (EIP) plays an integral role in enabling us to serve over 80 students at secondary and post-secondary schools in Kenya and Tanzania. We need a motivated volunteer who can lead a team to ensure our student’s educational and living needs are met to the highest standard possible.

Description of Duties:••

Ensure all EIP students are submitting quarterly reports and letters.
Coordinate Canadian based team to collectively read all supported student’s letters and reports.
Coordinate Canadian based team to identify issues students are facing.
Work together with greater EIP Africa team to solve issues students are facing
Oversee the creation of profiles/dossiers of each supported student.
Collaborate with greater EIP Africa team to determine which student stories to use on social media, and collect necessary photos and other info.
Conduct monthly Skype check-ins with at least one East African student (possibility to increase).
Opportunity to participate in Skype meetings between Canadian and East African members of EIP.
Opportunity to lead EIP presentations for schools or community groups in the volunteer’s home community, leading to fundraising and networking.
Desire to visit East Africa and do work in the field.

Skill requirements and attributes:

Detail oriented and organized.
Experience with Microsoft Excel, databases, spreadsheets, Skype, and email correspondence.
Ability to organize data on Microsoft One Drive and Google G Suite (or willingness to learn).
Ability to use a smartphone or tablet and communicate through WhatsApp, Slack and other applications (or willingness to learn).
Effective communication skills, especially in an intercultural setting.
Flexibility.
Problem solving.
Innovation and leadership to improve operations.
Public speaking (or willing to try).
Ability to work independently.

Web Designer

Position Summary: Currently Education Is Power Africa (EIP Africa), has launched a new website and we are looking for someone looking to help maintain the website and add features to it on a as need basis. Additionally, an emphasis is to be put into marketing our Skype to Africa initiatives with schools, and setting up a professional payment interface for selling our “Global Action Toolkit” to schools.

Description of Duties:

Review website and advise new design format.
Suggest ways to consolidate content for easier web experience for visitor.
Initiate new design using wordpress.org features.
Suggest other branding of organization.
Set up new donation interface more professional than existing one.
Oversee utilization of social media outlets on website.
Design new social media pages for EIP or improve existing ones.

Skill requirements and attributes:

Well organized.
Creative.
Ability to utilize a variety of social media apps as well as communication apps via smartphone or tablet.
Flexibility.
Problem solving.
Ability to work independently.

Training and Orientation: There will be an initial in-person orientation and ongoing support as required.

Time commitment: This is a temporary position until the project is complete and the website maintenance can be passed onto other volunteers.

Working conditions: We require the volunteer to use their own computer and work from home. Necessary minor expenses will be reimbursed upon submission of receipts and/or detailed log. Expenses for necessary WordPress plugins may also be funded as needed.
